How to Grow Your Business with SEO: A Step-by-Step Guide

Nat Lopez • November 7, 2022

You might be asking yourself, do I need SEO for my business? And the answer is yes – if you want to grow your business, that is. Growing a small business is hard enough without having to worry about things like rising customer acquisition costs and increased competition. But with SEO, you can level the playing field and give your business the boost it needs to succeed. Here’s how:

Step #1: Understand What Your Customers Are Searching For

The first step to growing your business with SEO is understanding what your customers are actually searching for. Once you know that, you can start tailoring your content to their specific needs and pain points. This will not only help you rank higher in search results, but it will also help you convert more leads into customers. There are a few different ways to go about this:

  • Use keyword research tools like Google AdWords Keyword Planner and Moz Keyword Explorer to find out which keywords are being searched the most in your industry.
  • Use Google Trends to see how these keywords have been trending over time. This will give you a good idea of which keywords are on the rise and which ones are on the decline.
  • Use Google Analytics to see which keywords are driving traffic to your website. This will give you an idea of which keywords are already working well for you and which ones you need to work on.

Step #2: Optimize Your Website for These Keywords

Once you’ve determined which keywords you want to target, it’s time to start optimizing your website for them. There are a few different places where you can use these keywords:

  • In your title tags – The title tag is the text that appears in the search engine results pages (SERPs) when someone searches for one of your targeted keywords. It should be unique to each page on your website and should accurately describe the content of that page.
  • In your meta descriptions – The meta description is the short blurb of text that appears under your title tag in the SERPs. It should be compelling and convince the searcher to click through to your website.
  • In your H1 tags – The H1 tag is the main heading of your page. Like your title tag, it should be unique to each page on your website and accurately describe the content of that page.
  • In your image alt tags – Image alt tags are used by search engines to “read” images on your website so they can be included in image search results. When choosing alt tags, be sure to use keyword-rich phrases that accurately describe the images.

Step #3: Create Compelling Content That Answers People’s Questions

Once you’ve optimized your website for your targeted keywords, it’s time to start creating compelling content that answers people’s questions related to those keywords. This content can come in a variety of forms, including blog posts, infographics, eBooks, white papers, etc. Whatever form it takes, though, it needs to be high quality and informative if you want it to rank well in search results and convince people to convert into customers/clients.

Step #4:Promote Your Content Through Outreach & Link Building

The final step in growing your business with SEO is promoting your content through outreach & link building so people actually see it and click through to your website from the SERPs (search engine results pages). Outreach involves reaching out to other websites/blogs in your industry and asking them if they would be interested in sharing/linking to one of your articles or infographics (make sure what you're offering is high quality and relevant). Link building involves adding links back TO YOUR OWN WEBSITE from other websites/blogs (make sure these links are coming from high-quality websites). Both activities help improve both organic traffic AND authority/credibility with Google so you can rank higher in search results pages AND convert more leads into customers/clients.

Conclusion

If you want people to find YOUR business when they're searching online, then YOU need SEO! Growing a small business is hard enough without having additional obstacles like customer acquisition costs or increased competition, but luckily there's a solution - optimization! By following these four steps outlined above - understand customer search behavior; optimize titles, descriptions & header tags; create valuable content; promote said content - you too can take advantage of everything SEO has to offer businesses serious about growth!
